Do you shove your feelings down? Bury them deep? Keep them from coming up and out?
It may seem like it’s easier to ignore feelings of hurt, anger, and sadness. But if you don’t acknowledge them, they can really wear on you mentally and physically, and you might not even know it.
Instead, try doing this:
- When painful feelings bubble up, let them surface and sit with them, even though your instinct may be to swallow them.
- Work through them.
- Release them.
I’ve been working on this process over the past few years, and it’s helped me become more conscious of what I do when uncomfortable feelings come up. I didn’t even realize I was shoving mine down until I really started paying attention.
It can be challenging, and take a lot of practice… but once you get in the habit of working through and letting go of those painful feelings, you’ll feel a weight lifted, and your mental health will be better for it.
